Gimbal Pad

Bridge notes · keeping a steady heading

The deck will roll. Keep the compass level.

Gimbal Pad is a small reference for people adding a second, smaller income to a full-time job. We don't sell courses, tools or coaching. On a ship, a gimbal is a pair of rings that lets the compass stay level while everything around it moves. With a job and side work moving at once, a few steady routines do the same job, keeping your heading readable when a week gets rough.

A compass hung in two gimbal rings. The outer ring, labelled job, tilts one way and the middle ring, labelled side work, tilts the other, while the compass card in the centre stays level, held by three routines: a fixed side-work slot, a weekly review and a protected rest day.JOBSIDE WORKNHELD LEVEL BYA fixed side-work slotA weekly 15-minute reviewOne protected rest day

The gimbal

Two rings move. The card stays level.

The outer ring is the job: busy months, overtime, travel. The middle ring is side work: a big order one week, nothing the next. Both will tilt; you can't stop that.

What keeps the compass readable is a small set of routines that don't move with them: one fixed slot for side work, a short weekly review, and a rest day that stays protected. When a rough day comes, you skip a slot, not the whole system.

Sea states

How steady different side work tends to be.

Some side work arrives in a steady swell; some comes in sudden waves. We leave pay out on purpose: rates vary too much by country and platform to print honestly.

Storm warnings

What can knock the needle off course.

  • FEES

    The rate isn't what arrives.

Platforms and payment services keep a share. Read the fee page before you start.

  • TAX

    Small amounts still count.

Side income is usually taxable. Keep a plain record from the first payment and check your tax authority's rules.

  • FATIGUE

    Late nights add up.

Side work that eats into sleep comes back as mistakes at the day job. Protect your rest first.

  • CONTRACT

Your employer may have a say.

Some employment contracts limit outside or competing work. Read yours and ask HR about anything unclear.

  • FRAUD

Offers that cost you to start.

Anyone asking for a fee, a kit purchase or help moving money isn't offering work. Walk away and report it.
